The Bravest
By Tom Paxton
(From Tom's newest CD "Looking for the Moon")

As I sat and watched the horror unfold on 9/11, I could smell the acrid smoke drifting south from the Pentagon. There was a never ending line of cars heading away from Washington. With the rest of the world I watched the towers come down and among the victims were 343 New York firemen. I'll never be able to look at a fireman or woman again without knowing that he or she would lay down their lives for me without ever knowing my name. We can never thank them enough.

John Ashcroft and 'The Spirit of Justice'
By Tom Paxton
(From an idea furnished by Anne Hills)

Most of you know the story by now. A statue of 'The Spirit of Justice' has stood for decades in the Justice Department and a long line of Attorneys General have stood before it when addresing the press. John Ashcroft, whose sensibilities are never offended by the news of another execution, was, however, upset at the sight of a marble breast peeking out from the statue's robe and caused a blue curtain to conceal it. It's still back there, though.

In Florida
By Tom Paxton

One of the things that attracted me to folk music so long ago was the huge number of songs about brigands, pirates, robbers and other socially inept types like that -- both real and imaginary. There were songs about Captain Kidd, Pretty Boy Floyd, Robin Hood -- hundreds of them. So, I formed an attachment for songs of great crimes, which is why all these years later I've written one about the election in Florida in 2000. I saw a pretty good bumper sticker that read: "Don't blame me. I voted with the majority."

Tinky-Winky
By Tom Paxton
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle ..

The surest way I've found to break out of a spell of writer's block is simply to check up on what Jerry Falwell has been saying lately. If not Jerry, then his pal Pat Robertson. The two of them constitute what is for me our very own American Taliban. But, whoa! Maybe I'm too harsh. It was, after all, Jerry Falwell who exposed the Teletubbies for the subversives they clearly are. In particular, Tinky-Winky -- a dodgy character, for sure, and an obvious homosexual icon. Just ask Jerry.
